If computers are your thing - specifically the networking, server and programming side of computers - this apprenticeship could be right up your street.

The broad purpose of an ICT occupation is to deliver efficient operation and control of an IT and / or Telecommunications infrastructure (comprising physical or virtual hardware, software, network services and data storage) either on-premises or to end-users provisioned as cloud services that is required to deliver and support the information systems needs of an organisation.

As a Technician, you will contribute to the preparation of new or changed services, operation of the change process, the maintenance of regulatory, legal and professional standards, the building and management of systems and components in virtualised and cloud computing environments, and the monitoring of performance of systems and services in relation to their contribution to business performance, their security and their sustainability.

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for prioritising systems support tasks as they arise and for monitoring and maintaining system performance.

Three routes/pathways exist in this standard – the employer will choose which of the routes best matches the role of the apprentice:

1. Support Technician

2. Network Technician

3. Digital Communications Technician

Entry requirements

Candidates require Level 2 Maths and English (equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above).

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course you will achieve a Level 3 Information Communication Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

What will I learn?

You will study various modules:

Networking Fundamentals:
Introduction to Networks – physical and virtual, the OSI protocol model, TCP/IP, Frames and Packets, Ports. Understand the difference between internet, intranets and extranets. Understand the need for Firewalls and the common network security threats. Describe and use VPN methods & authentication. Be able to use remote access solutions to solve issue/problems.

Describe the common WANs & LANs. Be able to define Logical and Physical network topologies, and understand the need for both and the differences

Coding & Logic:
Explore the fundamental similarities and differences between a range of coding and logic, the fundamental elements of website development, including commonly used languages, frameworks. Identify the relevant code to the task this can involve Linux & Bash scripts, Windows/DOS Batch Files and Powershell scripts, also involving command line commands.

Recognise the practical applications of: Algorithms, Flow Control: Branching, Looping, Iteration, Data structures: High level (e.g. objects, arrays), Strings, Integers, Floating Point.

Recognise the fundamental elements of website development, including commonly used language frameworks and security.

Hardware, Operating Systems and Mobile Devices:
Explore the security principles of platforms and Operating Systems, fundamentals of remote operation, deployment and secure integration of mobile devices. Understand different operating systems such as MAC OS, Linux/Unix to ensure you can work with a range of computer software and devices.

Describe the process for deploying remote systems management: Network setup, Wired, Wireless, Tethering, Network access, Security, Encryption technology standards (e.g. WPA2) Access methods, VPN

Cloud Services:
Explore the use of technology for delivering Cloud services including, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS. Configuration of user identity and access to Cloud services and Cloud backup and what a disaster recovery plan is.

Secure access: Passwords, Complexity, Biometrics, Geo-Location, Device ID. Users and groups: Account credentials, Permissions Management, Self-service portal, Devices/points of access, Authentication, Multifactor Authentication (MFA), Managing users and rights across multiple Cloud services.

Business Processes:
Organisation procedures Information security, Legislation, Human Rights Act, Data Protection Act 2018, GDPR, - Computer Misuse Act, Information security, Confidentiality.

Introduction to software development (DevOps) methodology including Agile & Waterfall, and tools such as Puppet, Chef and Docker.

Understand the need and use of Standard Operating Procedures.

Assessment Methods (AM) - taken in any order
- AM1: Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio - Fail, Pass or Distinction
- AM2: Project report with questioning - Fail, Pass or Distinction
Overarching Grade of Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this course, you can progress into full-time employment. Job titles would include Office IT Technician, 1st and 2nd Line Support Telecoms Technician, Telecommunications Technician, Helpdesk Support

English and maths

No formal Maths & English study is required for apprentices who have met the entry requirements for this apprenticeship, although Maths & English skills are embedded within course content.

Apprenticeship pay

Your employer will pay you Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage as a minimum, in line with national minimum wage regulations. Your rate of pay will be agreed with your employer.
