If you see a future in the technical services industry, this Plumbing apprenticeship may be for you.

Plumbing and domestic heating technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes and on building sites.

As a competent plumbing and heating technician, the installation of plumbing and heating systems includes accurate measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing metallic and non-metallic pipework.

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians are at the forefront of installing new and exciting environmental technologies like heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers and water recycling systems.

A plumbing and heating technician needs to be able to work independently or as a team and use their knowledge and skills to ensure that both the system and appliances are appropriately selected and correctly installed, often without any supervision, and done so in a safe, efficient and economical manner to minimise waste.

Entry requirements

Candidates require Level 2 Maths and English (equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above).

Other comparable qualification.
Employers may set their own additional entry requirements specific to their own organisational needs.

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course you will achieve a Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship Standard, Domestic Gas Safety CCN1 and Install/Maintain Gas Water and Wet Central Heating Appliances - CENWAT

What will I learn?

Health and safety practices and systems
Plumbing processes – hand and power tools, types of pipework jointing systems, pipe bending technics, bracketing systems and pipework installation technics.
Plumbing scientific principles – si systems of measurements, relationships between energy, heat and power.
Mechanical principles and principles of electricity
Planning and supervision systems and techniques
Cold water systems in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings
Domestic hot water systems including vented and unvented systems
Central heating systems including underfloor, radiator, ground source and air source heat pumps
Rain water systems – domestic guttering and down-comer drainage and grey water recycling systems
Domestic fuel systems – natural gas boilers, gas pipework installation, testing and commissioning (including gas safe modules ccn1 ‘core safety’ and cenwat ‘central heating boilers’)
Electrical wiring of heating control systems
Sanitation systems

Where can I progress?

By the end of this apprenticeship the candidate will have satisfied the requirements for registration as EngTech by the Engineering Council through The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and or The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

English and maths

No formal Maths & English study is required for apprentices who have met the entry requirements for this apprenticeship, although Maths & English skills are embedded within course content.

Apprenticeship pay

Your employer will pay you Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage as a minimum, in line with national minimum wage regulations. Your rate of pay will be agreed with your employer.
