More about the course

There’s more to beauty therapy than nails, lashes and brows. This course will help you to develop the skills and techniques you need to succeed in the beauty industry.

You will study a range of topics and you will be performing treatments in a real working salon. You will learn how to prepare for, and provide, manicure, pedicure, waxing, eyes and facial treatments.

During the academic year there will be opportunities to enrich your learning. You will have the opportunity to go to beauty shows which are held in Manchester and Birmingham throughout the year.

You will take part in competitions in house, across our colleges and have the opportunity to enter the world skills competitions. This will prepare you to work in a competitive environment whilst enhancing your professionalism, communication and working as part of a team.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D), including English and maths
Level 1 qualification vocational qualification
Level 1 functional skills qualification in English and maths / equivalent is desirable

Scottish equivalent

A friendly, mature approach and the ability to communicate effectively are essential. Along with a high level of personal hygiene, personal presentation, and awareness of health and safety.

Work experience opportunities

Working in our Essence Salon, you will gain experience providing treatments to real paying clients. Here you will get to grips with industry standard products and tools, helping you to build your confidence and communication skills.

You will also spend 52.5 hours on placement throughout your course.

English and Maths

Beauty Therapists and Aesthetic Practitioners rely on maths and English to take measurements, calculate product ratios, payments, costings and timings. We embed maths and English into your programme over the duration of your course.

If you have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 in maths and English, you will be supported to achieve these.

Where can I progress?

Upon successful completion of this course you can progress onto a Level 3 course including Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapies or Fashion, Theatrical and Media Hair and Make-up.

Beauty Tutor

I studied Beauty Therapy at Carlisle College 17 years ago. After gaining my qualification I had a wonderful career in the beauty industry, working as a beauty therapist, a development therapist and senior therapist. I gained experience in high street salons, award winning spas and on board cruise ships. 4 years ago I returned to Carlisle College to complete my teacher training. I now feel extremely lucky to be one of those tutors who can share my experiences, passion, skills and knowledge with the current beauty therapy students.

Every Life Matters attended the college to deliver sessions on Suicide Awareness to over 160 students from our Hair & Beauty and Health & Social Care courses.
