More about the course

Do you have a passion for hairdressing? Are you currently working in a salon with a Level 2 qualification and want to advance your skills in women’s cutting and colouring? Then this hairdressing course is for you.

This qualification is based on Hairdressing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's lead hairdressing professional association (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a senior hairdresser / stylist.

The Carlisle College Hairdressing team will ensure you receive thorough, professional training, using the latest equipment and techniques in demand within the Hair industry.

Guest speakers are booked in during the academic year to enhance your learning experience and knowledge. You will also have the opportunity to go to beauty shows which are held in Manchester and Birmingham throughout the academic year.

You will take part in competitions in house, across our colleges and have the opportunity to enter the world skills competitions. This will prepare you to work in a competitive environment whilst enhancing your professionalism, communication and working as part of a team.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) and above including English and maths
Level 2 Hairdressing and associated functional skills in English and maths
A high standard of personal hygiene and grooming and commitment to the course and a friendly and mature personality
Applicants will need to complete a skills test

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course you will achieve a Level 3 VTCT Diploma in Hairdressing.

Work experience opportunities

A work placement in a local salon is an integral part of the course. In order to successfully complete your practical skill assessments, students are requested to provide suitable clients for treatments.

English and Maths

English and maths are required in a hairdressing career for client communication, product and treatment costing, business planning, timings of treatments and product applications, and ratio of product mixing.

Where can I progress?

The Level 3 Diploma is a recognised qualification into the PTTLS Course (Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector course) with possible progression onto the DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Life Long Learning sector).

On successful completion of this course, you can also progress into operator roles within the industry, such as senior stylist, private educator and assessor, training academy employee, manager or salon owner.

Suicide Awareness Session

Every Life Matters attended the college to deliver sessions on Suicide Awareness to over 160 students from our Hair & Beauty and Health & Social Care courses.
