As a cyber security and cloud networking expert, you will be able to test consumer security posture, as well as design, test and implement a corporate network using industry-standard tools and equipment. You will be able to assess, analyse, and recommend business and enterprise networking, and security solutions, report and maintain the security posture of an organisation, and assess test results, their consistency and accuracy to plan for improvements.

Cyber Security

Exploring the nature of cybercrime and cyber threat actors.
Investigating cyber security threats and hazards.
Evaluating the effectiveness of information assurance concepts applied to ICT infrastructure.
Investigating incident response methods to cyber security threats.

Cloud Networking

Examine commonplace networking principles used in a cloud infrastructure to support
communication.
Explain the operation of networking technologies within a cloud infrastructure.
Design a networking solution for a cloud-based system for a business use case.
Enhance network performance for a cloud-based system developed for a given business use case.

Entry requirements

A level 3 Foundation Diploma in Computing, or a similar subject, or other related Level 3 Qualifications
5 GCSEs to include Maths and English at a 4, or the Scottish equivalent.
Relevant work experience and/or have an international equivalent to the above qualifications.
Be at least 18 years of age at the point of enrolment
Recognition of Prior Learning - Our Recognition of Prior Learning policy means that students’ previous learning and experience can be considered, and they may be awarded certain qualifications or units of a qualification based on that learning or experience. This can be discussed at the point of enrolment with a course leader.
We must ensure that each applicant can demonstrate their capability to learn and be assessed at the relevant level in English. Students applying for a Pearson BTEC Higher National qualification that is taught and assessed completely in English will need a certain level of English language skills. As such you may be required to provide proof of your level of English Language and Literature and/or may be required to complete an English Initial Assessment before enrolment to study.

How is the course taught?

This HNC course will take place over 480 hours (Guided Learning Hours) these are supported by your tutors, and other professionals within Carlisle College.

Full-time students study over 2-days a week
Part-time students study over 1-day a week

The course is made up of interactive seminars, where you will have an opportunity to discuss course concepts with your tutors and peers. You will also take part in practical lab activities where you will use Industry standard equipment to develop your skills and knowledge of Cyber Security and Cloud Networking concepts.

Other modes of study also included in this course are:

Independent and unsupervised research and learning
Unsupervised development of a work experience portfolio
Unsupervised e-learning using or VLE (Microsoft Teams)
Coursework and Examinations

You will be expected to carry out 720 hours of independent study outside of your classroom activities and timetable. The following constitutes independent learning hours:

Self-directed research and investigation
Reading set texts or other sources of information
Watching subject-related videos as part of investigation and research
Reviewing recordings of scheduled sessions or notes from those sessions
Peer activities, such as group meetings and online discussions, where students explore their learning together
Reviewing and recording thoughts on their own learning

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this HNC in Cyber Security and Cloud Networking, you can progress onto a Higher National Diploma (HND), an equivalent Level 5 programme (where RPL is accepted), or onto a Degree programme within the area of Digital Technologies or Computing at Carlisle College (subject to availability) or with another institution within the UK.
